Samaritan's Purse - Hurricane Florence Relief

to Nov 10

Samaritan's Purse - Hurricane Florence Relief

Deadline to sign up is October 8th.

Samaritan's Purse has put out a call and is requesting all past volunteers and any new volunteers that would have time to volunteer on the east coast following Hurricane Florence.

There is a minimal cost involved to volunteer with Samaritan's Purse, really just the food a person will eat on the way to and from the Carolinas. Once we check-in to the work location where we will be assigned all food and lodging is provided. Lodging is in a 5ft x 7ft space located in a Sunday school room, enough space to set up a cot or air mattress and your clothing. Samaritan's Purse is highly organized and has all the tools and equipment that will be necessary for any given assignment. Most crew leaders have past construction experience or have been volunteering for years and participate in extensive Samaritan's Purse training sessions.

As far as exactly what we would do in a response of this magnitude, there is no way to know what the exact needs will be in 2 months. The main thing volunteers need, is a willing heart and as Samaritan's Purse says for volunteers "to be the hands and feet of Christ". Many times at work locations the biggest aid a volunteer can do is sit and listen to the locals that need to tell their story. Recovery for many people is an emotional journey and Samaritan's Purse wants volunteers first and foremost to minister to the homeowners and "love" on them and just show the love of Jesus, so sometimes that involves no manual labor at all but to sit and listen. No construction skills or a background in construction is necessary. For example, it takes five or six people to haul debris from one person running a chainsaw. It seems Samaritan's Purse wants to keep the volunteers at each work location at around 200 people. There is always assistance needed in the kitchen preparing food for this many. With all the flooding from the excessive rain and tornadoes that have spun off this storm that there will still be huge multiple needs that could include:

  • Tornado debris cleanup - chainsaw work and hauling debris to the curb or piling the debris in one location so it can be burned.

  • Tarping of roofs from tornado damage

  • Flooding clean up - includes emptying homes of all contents and stripping walls to the bare studs.

  • helping in the cook trailer

  • helping keep the church facilities and the shower trailer cleaned
